Dear KAANET Network ,

IIIHR (Inje Institute for International Human Resources) International Korean Adoptee Program is now accepting applications for its 2011 Spring Semester(2nd of March to 10th of June) / 2011 Fall Semester(29th of August to 9th of December) and would like to invite your members to apply.

As part of Inje University (located in Gimhae, Gyungnam Province), the IIIHR program was created as a way for International Korean Adoptees to return to the ROK and learn more about Korean language, history, cooking, and culture.

We thought this is an opportunity your members would be interested in. The program was founded in 2001 and has hosted over 180 Korean Adoptees from all around the world.

2011 Spring and Fall Semester are 16 weeks long starting March 2nd - June 10th. The tuition fee of $600 USD covers classes, housing, cafeteria meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and day trips to cultural and historical sites for the whole semester.

The classes are approximately 10 students in size and taught in English. Students will live on campus us a Korean roommate, attend classes, and have access to Inje University's student organizations, weight training gyms, library, and computers.

More information and applications for 2011 Spring and Fall Semester, due February 11th, can be found at www.iiihr.net.

Please participate in a survey being conducted by the Center for Adoption Support and Education about what “adoption competent” really means when we talk about “adoption competent mental health professionals.”  Please go to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/98NLFDP and complete the survey. The Center for Adoption Support and Education will provide us with the results. This is a great opportunity to let the adoption and mental health fields know what you expect to find in an adoption competent mental health professional!

My name is Sherri Ter Molen, and I am the organizer of the Metro
Detroit Korean Language & Culture Meetup Group in Michigan. If you
have adoptee families in Eastern Michigan who would like to learn more
about the Korean language and culture, I would like to invite them to
join our group. Membership is free! We recently attended a traditional
Korean dance performance at Noel Night in Detroit; we've attended
dragon boat races, and we've met for dinner at Korean restaurants. Our
members are both ethnic Korean and non-ethnic Koreans who share an
interest in all things Korean. There are similar Meetup groups in
other parts of the country. In fact, I am also an assistant organizer
for the Chicago Korean Language Meetup Group. I hope you will share
this information with your network.

Sincerely,

Macho Like me is the true account of my 6 1/2 months journey living life as a man. Cutting off my hair, donning men's clothes and moving out of my home, I begin life anew as Harry. This was a life changing experience. I learned more than I ever wanted.

In my one woman show, I share with you actual footage of my journey as I tell m...y story. I had performed two live shows about a year and a half ago. Since then the documentary of Macho Like Me has been circulating at film festivals. It's been a thrill but I've missed doing the live show so I've decided to go for it. This time with a new director, Sammie Wayne. The show is awesome. Very different from the two show case shows I did at the Groundlings. This time around I get to perform a bit. Costume changes and all.

I hope to see many of you in the audience. I believe you too will be changed.

Mental Health and Adoption Part II

Saturday, January 15 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at KoRoot

Organized by Adoptee Solidarity Korea
Hosted by KoRoot (for directions please see below)
Time and date: January 15 from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Workshop facilitators: Molly Cho (ASK Member) and Kim Hyo-Jung Campbell (ASK Representative)

*This will be an adoptee-only event!
*There is no admission fee but if you want to attend we kindly ask you to rsvp via Facebook.

WORKSHOP

This writing workshop aims to provide a safe and comfortable space to self-reflect, share with others, and add to the "toolbox" of mental health resources within the adoptee community. Adoption specific writing prompts will be given to facilitate the writing process and small discussion groups held afterward. Participants are encouraged to share their writing or thoughts with others, but this is not mandatory. Perhaps you are a seasoned writer or never write at all, this is a great opportunity to put your thoughts to paper in a room full of supportive, fellow adoptees.

Inspired by author Natalie Goldberg and her book titled Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within, we will take Goldberg's advice and ask you to "write down the bones." From the book:

These are the rules. It is important to adhere to them because the aim is to burn through to first thoughts, to the place where energy is unobstructed by social politeness or the internal censor, to the place where you are writing what your mind actually sees and feels, not what it thinks it should see or feel. (Goldberg, 9)

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. Molly Cho can be reached at cho.molly@gmail.com. Kimberly Hyo-Jung Campbell can be reached at kimcampbell03@gmail.com.

Hope to see you there!
