My husband and I are adoptive parents to a Korean-born son who is biracial (black-Korean). We'd love to speak to Korean adoptees of a similar background who'd be willing to be their experience
as it relates to their school years. Our son will be eligible to begin kindergarten next year, and we could really use expert input as we weigh options/programs. We may be reached at: jrasr2010@yahoo.com. |

Dear fellow adopted Koreans!
My name is Tobias Hübinette, and I am a researcher in migration studies at the Multicultural Centre (http://www.mkc.botkyrka.se) in Stockholm, Sweden. I am
also a member of the Adopted Koreans’ Association of Sweden (AKF - http://www.akf.nu) and a co-founder of Truth and Reconciliation for the Adoption Community of Korea
(TRACK -http://justicespeaking.wordpress.com). For the moment, I am working for the newly established Korean migration museum in Incheon (http://mkeh.incheon.go.kr),
Korea, writing a report on the adopted Koreans and collecting material related to Korean adoption and Korean adoptees.
The Korean migration museum is the only museum of its kind in Korea focusing solely on the history of Korean emigration, the overseas Koreans and the worldwide Korean diaspora. Located on Wolmi Island
close to Incheon’s harbour from where the first generation of Korean Americans departed 100 years ago, the museum has today a permanent exhibition covering the history and situation of the Koreans in
the US and Central America. In the coming years, the museum will expand its scope to overseas Koreans in other countries and regions, and as part of this development the adopted Koreans will also be
officially
included. As a museum can be seen as something close to the “eternal memory of a nation” together with libraries and archives, the museum’s decision to acknowledge and accept the overseas adopted Koreans
as part of the modern Korean history and the global Korean diaspora is groundbreaking to say the least, and means that transnational adoption from Korea to more than 15 different Western countries is
finally being treated and regarded as an important part of the contemporary Korean society.
Up until now, I have provided the museum with samples of practically everything that I know of when it comes to adult adopted Koreans such as material representing the movement and the community and
the associations and the events (magazines, brochures, photos, stickers, badges, posters, Gathering related material and so on), academic and cultural works created by adopted Koreans (theses, papers,
novels, poems, songs, films, art works, comics, visuals etc), and newspaper and magazine articles, television, radio and internet interviews and other media coverages on both “famous” and “ordinary” adopted
Koreans.
However, the museum is now looking for authentic and physical artifacts to be used in the upcoming exhibition on adopted Koreans such as travel and adoption documents, baby dresses and child clothes,
Korean rubber shoes, adoption agency gifts, gruel and milk cans, images and photographs related to the time before adoption and so on, and that is the reason why I am now asking those of you who might
have such objects if you would consider donating them to the museum. If so, please contact the Team Manager and Curator Eun-Mi Park at the museum directly and in English: eunmipark@korea.kr
or 032-440 5931 / 010-2250 7981 (for those of you who are in Korea). You may also just use the postal address: The Museum of Korea Emigration History, Eun-mi Park, 102-2, Buksung-dong 1-ga, Jung-gu, Incheon
400-201, Republic of Korea.
Best regards and please spread this Call for donations to the Korean migration museum. |

Angel Island: Immigrant Gateway to America By Erika Lee and Judy Yung Oxford University Press, August 2010
A gripping portrait of the "Ellis Island of the West," highlighting the immigration stories that made Angel Island a place of heartbreak as well as hope
From 1910 to 1940, over half a million people sailed through the Golden Gate, hoping to start a new life in America. But they did not all disembark in San Francisco; instead, most were ferried
across the bay to the Angel Island Immigration Station. For many, this was the real gateway to the United States. For others, it was a prison and their final destination, before being sent home.
In this landmark book, published to commemorate the immigration station's 100th anniversary, historians Erika Lee and Judy Yung provide the first comprehensive history of the Angel Island Immigration
Station. Drawing on extensive new research, including immigration records, oral histories, and inscriptions on the barrack walls, the authors produce a sweeping yet intensely personal history
of Chinese "paper sons," Japanese picture brides, Korean refugee students, South Asian political activists, Russian and Jewish refugees, Mexican families, Filipino repatriates, and many others
from around
the world.
By examining the great diversity of immigrants who passed through America's Pacific gateway, Angel Island reframes our understanding of both the Angel Island Immigration Station and America's
complicated relationship to immigration, a story that continues today.

Renowned sculptor Jerry Wingren harnesses light and texture with the grace of a master and spirit of a monk. Residing on a mountaintop, this child of the North Pacific finds inspiration
in 3-5-9 Korean numerology, and casts his resting stones in a manner sure to win admirers of contemporary Korean design. The stones’ inner square allows the viewer to see within and beyond—employing both
the Japanese ma, or negative space, and the Korean mieum, a character of basic sound and life's essence. Inclined to naturalism, Wingren creates bold, contemplative, contemporary—yet timeless—works.

Instructor: Astrid Dabbeni
When: September 25, 2010, December 4, 2010
Time: 9 am to 3 pm
Where: Portland, OR
Cost: $90 per person
The decision to adopt across racial and cultural lines is a lifelong commitment to exploring matters of race, confronting racism in all its forms and constantly developing new skills and aptitudes.
This workshop will provide you with information, tools, and resources and create a sense of hope as you explore you and your children’s future as a transracial family. This workshop is appropriate for
adoptive parents, waiting parents, and professionals.
Workshop topics will include:
- Race matters
- Development of racial identity
- Cultural competence
- Tools for creating positive outcomes
- Talking to your child about race
- Confronting racism
- Personalizing culture
Here are some comments from past participants:
- I would recommend this class to current and prospective transracial families. This class gives you tools and a sense of competency for being able to talk to your children about racial issues.
- This class is a forum to talk about race. I think everyone learned to think differently about the role of parenting transracially, about the experience of being a minority in this culture, of having
the combination of being of color, being adopted and having parents of a different race.
- The thing I like about Astrid’s approach is that it is affirming. I appreciate that Adoption Mosaic focuses on the triad.
- Thank you for your openness and honesty – a model for us as parents.
This class is also offered on a request basis; contact us for details.

Pushing Past Race 101
Date: October 2, 2010 Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Location: Oakland, CA
Kaiser Oakland Medical Center Fabiola Building, Rm. 65 A 3505 Broadway, Oakland, CA
FOR PRE-ADOPTIVE AND TRANSRACIAL ADOPTIVE PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN
True Colors 2: Pushing Past Race 101 focuses on the life long education of adoptive parents parenting children of color across racial lines and features advanced conversations about race that begin
with a foundation that already acknowledges that racism exists and has a direct impact on ALL of our lives. You must have attended Pact's True Colors I (or demonstrate other substantive education on
transracial
adoption) to participate in this workshop. We will highlight hands on internal work with other parents to collaborate and develop parenting strategies.
True Colors 2 includes dissection of the politics of race, transracial and international adoption, and becoming a white ally. This workshop is a corrective action to assist participants in understanding
how race impacts transculturally and transracially adopted children as well as their (usually white) parents. We will ask you to dig deeper into your own unexplored racialized thinking and experience.
How do you think of yourselves as white allies to people of color? What does this mean? How does this relate to overcoming the urge to be the 'racism police' or learning how to speaking with, but not
for people of color? We will think specifically about how you operate in the neighborhoods and communities where you and your children reside, and how that translates to supporting your child's self-esteem,
and creating a strong sense of comfort in their own skin as well as membership in your family.
LUNCH: Lunch is included in this day long workshop, a vegetarian option is available per your request.
Cost: $72 Members, $87 Non-members Sorry no refunds.

The Brooklyn Museum, with one of the most extensive Korean collections in the West, has agreed to give the Korean Art Society a private viewing of the Korean masterpieces in its storage area. The
Brooklyn Museum has been collecting Korean art for 100 years, and was the first museum outside of Asia to open a permanent Korean gallery. The Korean government recently spent five years cataloging Brooklyn's
important Korean collection, and we have copies of that catalog available to give to Korean Art Society members. When you see this catalog, you will be amazed at the number of fine and rare pieces in
the collection and will understand why the Korean government decided that it was necessary to catalog this comprehensive and very important collection. Because of space and budget limitations, only a
very small percentage of the collection is on view, and most of it rarely ever gets displayed. So this is a unique opportunity for lovers of Korean art.

Center For Family Connections (CFFC)-a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides therapy, training, education, and advocacy to children, families, and professionals touched by adoption,
foster care, and other complex blended families·-is hosting a fundraiser event on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the Hotel Marlowe in Cambridge, MA. This event will celebrate
National Adoption Month and is the 9th Annual Courage and Curiosity Fundraiser, in honor of the extraordinary courage and the eager curiosity of the children and families in adoption. All funds
raised will directly support CFFC's mission of providing innovative programs and services for children, families, and professionals in the world of adoption, foster care, and other complex blended
families-including teen 'zine creation, our theater enrichment program, clinically supervised visits, pro bono clinical services, and countless other much-needed programs and services. To learn
more about CFFC and our mission, please see our website, www.kinnect.org. The funds raised at our last year's event totaled just over $30,000. This year our goal is $50,000.
Please help us reach this goal by donating auction items, placing an ad in the event program, and/or attending the fundraiser with a group of friends to bid and help the lives of children and
families.
One of the many exciting attractions of this event will be the silent and live auctions. We plan to auction off a wide variety of items and services and hope that you can help!
Those attending the event will be CFFC supporters ranging in age from 25-60+, all of whom are interested in child welfare. An event program will be given to all attendees and will include
information about the auction and other event attractions. We would greatly appreciate if you could donate any item, service, or gift certificate that is significant for both you and the
potential winner(s). Donations can be "typical" (i.e. a gift certificate) or "atypical" (i.e. a meal for six cooked in your home or homemade crafts)....and no donation is too small! In
exchange for your generous auction donation: · Your name will be printed in the event program that will be handed out to the approximately 200 attendees (if it is received
by October 22nd). · Your name may be listed on our website (depending on the value of the donation). Another way you can contribute is by placing an ad in the event
program, which will be handed out to the approximately 200+ attendees-a great way to support CFFC and gain exposure for you/your business! Feel free to contact CFFC at 617-547-0909 with
any questions regarding CFFC or our 9th Annual Courage and Curiosity Fundraiser.

Do you have a heart for service? Do you want to “travel with a purpose”? Dillon International’s Sharing Heart Mission Trip: Korea is a week-long mission trip during which participants serve the people
of Korea by working at Eastern Social Welfare Society’s various community service facilities. These include:
· Babies Home
· Sharon’s Home (for unwed mothers)
· Eastern Welfare Town at Pyeongtaek (for school-age children with special needs)
· Anyang Child Welfare Center (babies and school-age children)
· Sodaemun Community Center (for senior citizens)
The main focus of the trip is service; however, there is some time for sightseeing and Korean culture as well. If adoptees choose to utilize our search services, they will be able to review their
adoption file, visit their birth place, and meet foster and/or birth family on this trip.
You can read more about the trip and/or request a registration packet at http://www.dillonadopt.com
You may also email tours@dillonadopt.com with any questions. |
