From cuisine and martial arts to sex and self-esteem, East Eats West shines new light on the bridges and crossroads where two hemispheres meld into one worldwide "immigrant nation." In this new nation, with its amalgamation of divergent ideas, tastes, and styles, today's bold fusion becomes tomorrow's classic. But while the space between East and West continues to shrink in this age of globalization, some cultural gaps remain.

In this collection of twenty-one personal essays, Andrew Lam, the award-winning author of Perfume Dreams, continues to explore the Vietnamese diaspora, this time concentrating not only on how the East and West have changed but how they are changing each other. Lively and engaging, East Eats West searches for meaning in nebulous territory charted by very few. Part memoir, part meditation, and part cultural anthropology, East Eats West is about thriving in the West with one foot still in the East.

Hello, my name is Elizabeth Lewin. I am a Korean adoptee living in Washington DC.

Recently my sister (my biological twin) received a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English and is stationed in Mokpo. This has been an interesting experience for her and me. Even though I am still in the US I feel that this journey is as much mine as it is hers'. I am in many ways witness and advocate. My sister is interested in getting to know her Korean culture while I am interested in the adopted Korean diaspora existing and approaching adulthood in America.

It has recently come to my attention that a majority of adopted Korean have a photo of themselves and their foster mother seated together agencies would send this photo to the soon to be adoptive parents. My parents have noted that when they were at the airport to receive my sister and I there were other adoptive parents with similar photographs, it was something physical that connects us all. I have one of these photos I also have a photo of myself and my sister when we were newborns. It is an odd photo we are sort of plopped on a blanket.

I am in search of these photos. I would like to document these photos in an artist video I am preparing for. I will be traveling to Korea in January to visit my sister. I wish to begin shooting whenever possible.

Anonymity will be honored, credit will be given. This is something for me as much as it is an exercise in my artistic practice. If my video comes into being I will submit it to several video databanks and shows.

If you are interested in helping me by submitting a photo, please contac me at elizabeth.tannie.lewin@gmail.com

Thank you for your time and consideration,
Sincerely
E Lewin

We will be doing some book giveaways this week among the current fans, so be in it to win it!

For those of you who are interested in keeping up with what is going on with
Katie Cramer, the 16 year old with leukemia from Luizhou, go to her webpage
at www.katiecramer.org.

Several people have also asked me if their teen children can be tested to
see if they are a match for Katie. If you scroll down on her website,
Katie's mom posted how to do this under a post about "HLA Typing". It is
possible; blood drives will only process samples from people 18 - 60, but
you can get it done independently if your teen would like to do this.

I bought all of the following tapes and DVDs for my two Korean born sons. Most were purchased in Korea. They are all in the Korean language.  My sons loved them and were beginning to understand the language that was spoken to them at the Korean language school in Anchorage where we lived. We now live in Hawaii and the boys are too old for these. I am looking to sell them to a family or group with young Korean children who wish to expose their kids to the language in an engaging way.  This is a huge batch and it took me quite a while to compile it but if someone is serious and wants to buy it I will sell it for $300 including shipping.

Please let me know if anyone is interested at jlkim5@gmail.com

What to expect?   Please join in on conversations with decision makers, funders, practitioners, organizers, advocates, researchers and the media as we explore the accomplishments and best practices of working with New York City’s Asian Pacific American community.

To address the growing international concerns surrounding intercountry
adoption and the need to reduce corruption and human trafficking while
maximizing the best interests of children, the University of Waterloo
in Ontario, Canada is hosting a first-ever Intercountry Adoption Summit.

This Summit has two goals:

- To bring together the most influential countries of origin and
receiving countries involved in intercountry adoption to share
research, practices, experiences, and current status related to
intercountry adoption.

- To bring together the top researchers in intercountry adoption
from around the world to share findings and explore ideas in an
interdisciplinary format.

The Intercountry Adoption Summit is essentially two distinct, but
connected international gatherings held during one 4-day event from
September 23 - September 26, 2010 in Stratford, Ontario. The Summit
brings a global and interdisciplinary perspective to the conversation
about intercountry adoption.

The first gathering brings influential countries involved in
intercountry adoption together to discuss the current and future state
of intercountry adoption. This first gathering is by invitation only
but the public is invited to their closing session on September 24,
2010 where their recommendations for the future of intercountry
adoption will be presented.

The second gathering brings researchers and scholars from around the
world together to showcase their research in intercountry adoption and
is open to the general public. Scholars from 14 major disciplines
involved in intercountry adoption research will be attending. Visit
the Intercountry Adoption Summit website to find out who they are.

Registration fees for the Summit are:

$280 CAD for early bird rate (until June 19, 2010); $380 CAD regular
rate

Registration includes: Attendance at all academic and scholarly
sessions (September 24-25, 2010), lunch on Friday, September 24th
where country recommendations will be presented, dinner on Saturday,
September 25th, continental breakfast and all refreshment breaks on
Friday and Saturday, DVD of all academic and scholarly sessions, and
eligibility for discount tickets to Stratford Shakespeare Festival.

The Brooklyn Museum, with one of the most extensive Korean collections in the West, has agreed to give the Korean Art Society a private viewing of the Korean masterpieces in its storage area. The Brooklyn Museum has been collecting Korean art for 100 years, and was the first museum outside of Asia to open a permanent Korean gallery. The Korean government recently spent five years cataloging Brooklyn's important Korean collection, and we have copies of that catalog available to give to Korean Art Society members. When you see this catalog, you will be amazed at the number of fine and rare pieces in the collection and will understand why the Korean government decided that it was necessary to catalog this comprehensive and very important collection. Because of space and budget limitations, only a very small percentage of the collection is on view, and most of it rarely ever gets displayed. So this is a unique opportunity for lovers of Korean art.

Center For Family Connections (CFFC)-a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides therapy, training,
education, and advocacy to children, families, and professionals touched by adoption, foster care, and
other complex blended families·-is hosting a fundraiser event on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the
Hotel Marlowe in Cambridge, MA.

This event will celebrate National Adoption Month and is the 9th Annual Courage and Curiosity Fundraiser,
in honor of the extraordinary courage and the eager curiosity of the children and families in adoption.
All funds raised will directly support CFFC's mission of providing innovative programs and services for
children, families, and professionals in the world of adoption, foster care, and other complex blended
families-including teen 'zine creation, our theater enrichment program, clinically supervised visits,
pro bono clinical services, and countless other much-needed programs and services. To learn more about
CFFC and our mission, please see our website, www.kinnect.org.

The funds raised at our last year's event totaled just over $30,000.  This year our goal is $50,000.  Please
help us reach this goal by donating auction items, placing an ad in the event program, and/or attending
the fundraiser with a group of friends to bid and help the lives of children and families.

One of the many exciting attractions of this event will be the silent and live auctions.  We plan to auction
off a wide variety of items and services and hope that you can help!  Those attending the event will be
CFFC supporters ranging in age from 25-60+, all of whom are interested in child welfare.  An event program
will be given to all attendees and will include information about the auction and other event attractions.

We would greatly appreciate if you could donate any item, service, or gift certificate that is significant for
both you and the potential winner(s). Donations can be "typical" (i.e. a gift certificate) or "atypical"
(i.e. a meal for six cooked in your home or homemade crafts)....and no donation is too small!

In exchange for your generous auction donation:
·    Your name will be printed in the event program that will be handed out to the approximately 200
attendees (if it is received by October 22nd).
·    Your name may be listed on our website (depending on the value of the donation).

Another way you can contribute is by placing an ad in the event program, which will be handed out to
the approximately 200+ attendees-a great way to support CFFC and gain exposure for you/your business!

Feel free to contact CFFC at 617-547-0909 with any questions regarding
CFFC or our 9th Annual Courage and Curiosity Fundraiser.

Do you have a heart for service? Do you want to “travel with a purpose”? Dillon International’s Sharing Heart Mission Trip: Korea is a week-long mission trip during which participants serve the people of Korea by working at Eastern Social Welfare Society’s various community service facilities. These include:

·         Babies Home

·         Sharon’s Home (for unwed mothers)

·         Eastern Welfare Town at Pyeongtaek (for school-age children with special needs)

·         Anyang Child Welfare Center (babies and school-age children)

·         Sodaemun Community Center (for senior citizens)

The main focus of the trip is service; however, there is some time for sightseeing and Korean culture as well. If adoptees choose to utilize our search services, they will be able to review their adoption file, visit their birth place, and meet foster and/or birth family on this trip.
