KAAN 2010 Call for Session Proposals |
The 2010 KAAN Conference will be held in Hershey, PA from July 23-25, 2010. Our theme is The Road Ahead. This theme is relevant as Korea looks at closing international adoption,
as racial discussions and perspectives continue to evolve in the United States, and as North Korea’s situation changes every day with questions of war, reunification, and human rights on the forefront.
What wisdom can KAAN presenters and participants bring to these discussions? How can we listen and respond to each other and the world around us? How can we as a community support adoptees and adoptive
parents of all ages?
We are currently soliciting presentation and workshop proposals. All proposals are welcome, but of particular interest are those related to this year’s theme. You can find a proposal form at
www.kaanconference.com. Click on 2010 Proposal Form in the right hand column. Proposals are due by December 1, 2009. |

KAAN Annual Appeal |
Think of the five annual events or gatherings that mean the most to you. Is KAAN on the list? What do you like most about KAAN?
It may surprise you to learn that KAAN is an entirely volunteer-run organization. None of its staff or volunteers receive any compensation and in fact often are significant donors. There is a strong
enough commitment to the cause of KAAN that other opportunities are set aside and professional level work is delivered gratis. This dedication—as well as some local and national fundraising—has previously
been enough to sustain the organization.
However, we are now in vulnerable times and are reaching out to those who have benefited from KAAN for help. We have begun an annual appeal to help fund costs and continue to keep conference fees
low. Will you consider adding KAAN to your list of charities and making a tax-deductible annual gift of $50 or $100? Any amount will make a difference. We’d also like to challenge ten households to make
a gift of $500 to $1000. Checks should be made out to KAAN and mailed to:
KAAN P.O Box 714 Camp Hill, PA 17001
Thank you for considering this. All support is greatly appreciated. | |

A Euro-American on a Korean Tour at a Thai Restaurant in China : With
each chapter examining issues that interethnic adoptive families experience, Chris
Winston weaves her own perspective on her adoption experience with perspectives
related to her by her own children, adopted adults, other adoptive parents, birth
parents, Koreans, Korean Americans, and Asian Americans. While the book’s focus
is on experiences with Korean adoption, the experiences are transferable to inter-ethnic
adoptions from any country. Author's

Pushing Up the Sky : This is the story of a remarkable family facing
incredible challenges of cancer while simultaneously figuring out how to weave their
adopted children's Korean heritage and racial ethnicity into their family. It is a story of
compromises and insights, profound joy, deep suffering, and terrific rewards. Parenting birth
and adopted children — is one theme of this book. Most of all, it is a story on the meaning
of family, and learning to let go of expectations and to forge a new identity. Author's

The first novel about present-day North Korea to be published in the West. A moving and true-to-life tale of courage in the face of oppression and exile. Hyejin Kim’s Jia follows the
adventures of an orphaned young woman, Jia, who has the grace of a dancer but the misfortune of coming from a politically suspect family. In the isolated mining village of her childhood, Jia’s father,
a science teacher, questions government intrusion into his classroom and is taken away by police, never to be heard from again. Now Jia must leave the village where her family has been sent as punishment
to carve a path for herself. Her journey takes her first to Pyongyang, and finally to Shenyang in northeast China. Along the way, she falls in love with a soldier, befriends beggars, is kidnapped, beaten,
and sold, negotiates Chinese culture, and learns to balance cruel necessity with the possibilities of kindness and love. Above all, Jia must remain wary, always ready to adapt to the “capricious political
winds” of modern North Korea and China.

Call for Papers Adoption: Secret Histories, Public Policies 3rd International Conference on Adoption and Culture
Conference date: April 29 - May 2, 2010 ? note new dates! at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA 02139 Proposal deadline: Sept. 1, 2009 Organized by the Alliance for
the Study of Adoption and Culture Conference Organizers: Sally Haslanger (MIT), Marianne Novy (University of Pittsburgh), Charlotte Witt (UNH)
Adoption has often, though not always, involved secrecy. How has secrecy or openness affected the history, experience and representations of adoption?
• How have literature and film portrayed the impact of secrecy and disclosure on adoptees, birthparents, adoptive parents? What is the impact of recent revelations of secret histories in memoir,
books such as The Girls Who Went Away, documentaries such as First Person Plural? • How and why did adoption secrecy, and the practices it hides, develop differently in different cultures, countries,
and even different states? Where are alternatives to secrecy practiced and how do they work? How has increasing openness in domestic adoption changed the experience of adoption? Why do laws sealing
birth records have such staying power in the US? • What public policies do our current adoption practices promote and what should they promote? What are the effects of secrecy and openness on the health
and well-being of adoptees, birthparents and adoptive parents? What are the ethical implications of genetic testing for adoption practices? How can analysis of secrecy practice in adoption be applied
to assisted reproduction? • How should we distinguish secrecy, privacy, and confidentiality in relation to adoption? How does secrecy in adoption relate to race, economics, and sexual orientation?
How does it work differently in transnational adoption, in adopting waiting children, children in foster care, and children with special needs? How can literary and film critics, philosophers,
anthropologists, historians, sociologists, psychologists, political scientists, legal scholars, activists, creative writers, culture studies scholars, and others enrich our understanding of these
issues? Papers should discuss representations of adoption (including representations of birthparents) in literature, film, and other arts, and/or interactions between adoption practices and
culture(s)
in fields such as those listed. We are also interested in readings of memoir, poetry, and fiction dealing with adoption, and will consider musicians and performance artists.
Confirmed keynote speakers are Ann Fessler, author of The Girls Who Went Away: The Hidden History of Women Who Surrendered Children for Adoption in the Decades Before Roe v. Wade, DeAnn Borshay
Liem, filmmaker of First Person Plural, Lynn Lauber, novelist, memoirist, author of Listen to Me: Writing Life into Meaning, and birthmother, and Anita Allen, professor of law and philosophy
and author of Why Privacy isn’t Everything.
Other expected speakers include Marla Brettschneider, Naomi Cahn, Wayne Carp, Meredith Hall, Ellen Herman, Craig Hickman, Emily Hipchen, Margaret Homans, Mark Jerng, Kate Livingston, Elizabeth
Samuels, Carol Singley, Sarah Tobias.
Please send 200-word proposals for papers or samples of creative work (of less than 10 pages) dealing with adoption, with a brief CV, to

Are you an adult who has been transracially adopted by white parents? Do you know one? Please see the letter below about an exciting study exploring those experiences. August 2009
Hello:
You are invited to participate in a study exploring the experiences of adults who were transracially adopted by White parents. In research, the topic of transracial adoption has often been
addressed through the perspectives of adoptive parents and my hope with this dissertation project is to understand more about transracially adoptive family dynamics through the experiences of adopted
adults.
I am interested in bringing voice to the stories of adopted persons of color who were raised by White parents and, thus, am looking for individuals who would be willing to participate in an in-person
interview. Interviews will be conducted in a place designated as most convenient by each participant. Further, each interviewee's confidentiality will be protected; no names will be associated
with interview materials.
If you are a transracially adopted adult who was raised by White parents and are interested in participating in this study, or would like more information, please contact me at rmr2119@columbia.edu .
Thank you so much for your consideration of my request.
Best regards, Rebecca Redington, M.A. Doctoral Candidate in Counseling Psychology Department of Counseling and Clinical Psychology Teachers College, Columbia University rmr2119@columbia.edu

One of the many milestones in an adoptee's life is the decision to visit his or her birth country. Dillon International's birthland tour offers a complete tour package for all families, regardless
of agency used for adoption placement, that allows participants to experience their birth country's culture, heritage and people. This journey is a great emotional and financial commitment allowing adopted
persons an opportunity to learn more about their origins. Our mission trips allow participants to love and serve the people of Korea as well as experience the country and, for adoptees, explore their
birth country and origins.
Dates: November 21-28, 2009 – an opportunity for adoptees and their friends and family, adoptive families and those with a heart for Korea to serve in Korea.

Missionary Photography in Korea: Encountering the West Through Christianity
May 19 - August 14, 2009
Gallery hours:
Monday through Friday: 10:00 AM-5:00 PM
Opening Reception
Tuesday, May 19, 2009 6:00 PM-8:30 PM
The Korea Society Gallery
950 Third Avenue @ 57th Street, 8th Floor (Building entrance on SW corner of Third Avenue and 57th Street)
Free and Open to the Public, but RSVP is requried To RSVP go to: http://www.koreasociety.rsvp3.com
The arrival of the first Western missionaries in Korea in the late 19th century was a pivotal moment in the history of Christianity in Korea and the history of Korea as a whole. The missionaries established
new religious identities and stoked early culture clashes. They also documented their mission and the society around them with early cameras. Missionary Photography in Korea: Encountering the West
Through Christianity—the largest ever show of Korean missionary photographs in the U.S.—features rare images taken by missionaries in Korea between 1890 and 1940.
Taken between the early 1890s and the late 1930s by both Protestant andCatholic missionaries, the photographs—on display along with unique supplementary objects such as an original photo album and
New Year's calendars—offer a singular perspective on life in Korea during times of profound change. They illustrate the forging of contemporary institutions and values in the crucible of encounters
with American Christian missionaries by Koreans.
The impact of early Western contact on Koreans is evident in the telltale signs of new cultural norms and new religious identities, and clues that these new ways were conflicting with long-held traditions.
Less directly evident, but equally important, the images also allow the viewer to surmise how Koreans in turn had a formative impact on the missionaries, which led to intertwined personal histories that
became afoundation for subsequent relations between Korea and the United States.
Drawn from four private collections and six academic archives, the images have been digitally restored and printed in a manner that retains, as far as possible, the archival quality of the images.
This exhibition will be available for loan to universities and other institutions in the U.S. in Fall 2009.
For more information about the exhibit contact Heewon Kim at 212-759-7525, ext. 355 |

Korean Cars Drive to the Top: A Look at the Korean Car Industry
with
Don Southerton
President and CEO, Bridging Culture Worldwide
Wednesday, September 9, 2009
11:30 AM-12:00 AM ? Registration 12:00 PM-1:30 PM ? Lunch and Presentation
The Korea Society 950 Third Avenue @ 57th Street, 8th Floor (Building entrance on SW corner of Third Avenue and 57th Street)
Upon their arrival in America during the mid-1980s, Korean cars were met with late-night comedians poking fun at their quality and durability. Such sentiments seem antiquated today with Hyundai and
Kia ranking highly in quality and consumer confidence. The Hyundai Genesis even picked up the 2009 North American Car of the Year award. Add all of this to spectacular sales figures, and it's easy to
see that Korean cars have come a long way.
$20 for members and students, $30 for nonmembers (Walk-in registration will incur an additional charge of $5.) To purchase tickets go to http://www.koreasociety.org
For more information or to register for the program, contact Patrick Clair at 212-759-7525, ext. 328, or email patrick.ny@koreasociety.org
About the Speaker
Don Southerton, president and CEO of Bridging Culture Worldwide, is an adviser, consultant, and trainer for many of the top Korean-based corporations with business operations in America,
as well as major Western firms that have ventures in Korea. Southerton writes and comments extensively on modern Korean business culture and its impact on global organizations. His latest work is Chemulpo

Seodo folk songs are those of Hwanghae Province and Pyeongan Province both of which are now regions of North Korea. Compared to other regional folk songs, they have a high register and the notes of
the middle register are vibrated widely rendering a lamenting mood. The timbre of Seodo folk songs carry a resonant quality that originates in the lower abdomen. With this unique vocal style, Seodo folk
songs are often performed without accompaniment. The peculiar vocalization of Seodosori is related to the dialect of the region. -- "??? ??? ??? ????.." Eun-Hee Koo, Ed.D. President and

September 12, 2009 9:00am - 4:00pm
True Colors 2 focuses on the life long education of adoptive parents parenting children of color across racial lines and features advanced conversations about race that begin with a foundation that
already acknowledges that racism exists and has a direct impact on ALL of our lives. You must have attended Pact's True Colors I (or demonstrate other substantive education on transracial adoption) to
participate in this workshop. We will highlight hands on internal work with other parents to collaborate and develop parenting strategies.
Featuring the film
Making Whiteness Visible
Featured Speaker
Julia Sudbury
Facilitators
Martha Rynberg Beth Hall
True Colors 2 includes dissection of the politics of race, transracial and international adoption, and becoming a white ally. This workshop is a corrective action to assist participants in understanding
how race impacts transculturally and transracially adopted children as well as their (usually white) parents. We will ask you to dig deeper into your own unexplored racialized thinking and experience.
How do you think of yourselves as white allies to people of color? What does this mean? How does this relate to overcoming the urge to be the 'racism police' or learning how to speaking with, but not
for people of color? We will think specifically about how you operate in the neighborhoods and communities where you and your children reside, and how that translates to supporting your child's self-esteem,
and creating a strong sense of comfort in their own skin as well as membership in your family.

We have many Pact parents who have formed a peer support/ play group of parents with common interests and adopted children of color with shared experience. As a service to our members, Pact agrees
to send out e-flyers to member families. There will be no Pact staff in attendance but we do want to encourage the efforts of adoptive families to connect to one another.
GOALS
Let kids meet and have fun together.
Get more involved with Pact and other families like yours.
Connect with other adoptive families.

Nationally acclaimed writer Terra Trevor will present: “Evolution of Adoptive Parent Identity: The Crossroads of Transracial Parenting.”
How do our adoptive parent identities evolve? How do we explore, particularly if we are white, our identity as white parents going beyond the idea of raising children of color in a Caucasian community?
What can adoptive parents who have lived primarily in white communities do to change their conditioning while making new friendships within an unfamiliar racial and ethnic culture? Terra Trevor will lead
a candid conversation followed by a panel discussion with adults who were adopted transracially.

Please mark your calendars for September 13. Won Buddhism in Somerville (7 Hill Street) is hosting an annual event for the Korean adoption community. They will have free food for all who come. I was
there last year (help cooking) and it was a very nice event. I believe it starts around 11 am. A lot of people from the neighborhood came too, and enjoyed the food as well.
